オーストラリアの写真家
MARK EDEN 氏の取材をお受けしました。

正直なところ、最初はお断りしようか迷いました。
伝統的な有名産地が全国にある中で、紙びよりはまだ新しい工房。
古民家の重厚な工房や、作務衣の職人といった
いわゆる“日本の伝統”のイメージとは少し違う場所で、
小さく静かに和紙を漉いています。

それを正直にお伝えしたら、
それでも
「まさに、今の時代に工芸を続ける作り手を取材したい」
と強く声をかけていただき、今回の撮影が実現しました。

取材では、
――これからの伝統工芸はどんな方向へ進むと考えるか？
――紙びよりが目指す和紙の未来とは？
そんな鋭い質問をいただき、
自分自身の原点や歩みを改めて見つめ直す時間となりました。

撮影された写真は、写真集として掲載いただく予定です。
たぶんまだ先になるでしょうが、
出版が決まりましたら改めてお知らせします。

Interview with Photographer MARK EDEN

I had the opportunity to be interviewed by Australian photographer
MARK EDEN.

To be honest, I initially hesitated.
Compared to Japan’s well-known traditional paper-making regions,
Paper Biyori is still a young studio.
We do not work in a grand historic building or wear formal traditional craftsman attire.
Instead, we make paper quietly and humbly in a small workshop.

When I shared this honestly, he said:
“That is exactly why I want to document your work —
a craftsperson continuing tradition in today’s world.”
And the shoot was confirmed.

During the interview, I was asked insightful questions such as:
— Where should traditional crafts go from here?
— What does the future of washi look like for Paper Biyori?

These questions led me to reflect deeply on my origins and the path ahead.

The photographs taken will be published in an upcoming photo book.
It may take some time before release,
but I will announce details once they are finalized.
